Translation is the process of translating words or content from one language into another. The original language content is known as the source text and the translated language content is known as the target text. A skilled translator should be a native speaker of the target language and have an excellent knowledge of the source language, as well as having in-depth expertise of the subject matter in question.
I work with SDL Trados Studio translation memory software, where required, to ensure consistent use of terminology for repeat customers.
Mono-lingual editing is the revision of a text by a native speaker without reference to a source text (e.g. translation). The aim is to correct any potential spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors and to enhance readability (e.g. taking account of sentence structure, repetition, style) to create a polished and professional text, tailored to the intended readership.
Proofreading is the revision of a translation by comparing the English target text to the German or French source text. The aim is to identify and correct any mistranslations, omissions/additions or other linguistic or numerical errors in the target text. The end result is a professional translation which reflects the content of the original as accurately as possible while also being tailored to the intended target readership.
Localisation is the adaptation of a text to a different variant of English (e.g. from British to American English), taking account of spelling, grammar, vocabulary and style. The final text is optimised for the intended readership to give a professional impression in the intended target market.
